Fan revamping for a thermoelectric power plant
At the heart of a thermoelectric power plant, every component plays a crucial role in the overall efficiency and performance of the system. A striking example of innovation and performance enhancement is our recent revamping project involving the replacement of a large fan’s impeller made by CBI Engineering & Service.
Innovation in Blade Geometry
The key to our success was the design of a new blade with optimized geometry. This allowed for a significant increase in fan performance. Through advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, we were able to test and refine the design to ensure optimal results.
- Old impeller: flat-convex profile, with long flap plate for increasing
- New Impeller: concave-convex profile, with new flaps
CFD Simulation
CFD Simulation Input:
- Air Temperature: 150° C
- Rotational Speed: 1000 rpm
- Reference Pressure: 1 atm
The simulation showed a 15% increase in mass flow rate compared to the existing impeller, achieving a flow of 938,172 m³/h. This improvement was made possible by the advanced blade geometry, which reduced the formation of separation vortices, a problem present with the previous impeller.

Results and Comparisons
The comparison between the new and old impellers highlighted excellent results:
- The new impeller demonstrated a 15% higher mass flow rate than the existing one, confirming the effectiveness of the new geometry.
- The power absorbed by the new impeller was lower than the motor’s rated power, ensuring operational efficiency and safety.
- The only drawback of the existing impeller was the separation vortex at the blade’s trailing edge, which negatively impacted performance.
